What counts as a topical or an oil?

A cannabis oil is an extract in a carrier oil, sold in a dropper bottle or a metered oral spray and taken by mouth. The label lists THC and CBD in milligrams per millilitre and per bottle, and most come in CBD-forward, balanced 1:1 or THC-forward ratios. A topical is a cream, balm or lotion with cannabis in it that goes on the skin. Both are packaged in child-resistant containers and, like everything on the shelf, come only from licensed Canadian producers through the OCS.

How do I read the dose on an oil or spray?

Oils are measured, not smoked, so the number that matters is milligrams per dose rather than a THC percentage. A 30 mL bottle at 25 mg/mL holds 750 mg of THC in total; one 0.25 mL drop of it is about 6 mg. Sprays list milligrams per spray. Health Canada’s guidance for anyone new to ingested cannabis is to start at 2.5 mg of THC or less and wait; ingested cannabis can take up to four hours to feel fully and can last up to twelve.
